Welcome! ようこそ!

I set up this blog to hopefully introduce those outside Japan to some of Japan's best music and a taste of Osaka and Kyoto's thriving underground music scene.

Alot of what I post will be CDR's and CD's sold by bands on the Kyoto/Osaka live circuit. Hopefully giving a little exposure to the bands outside Japan. The rest will be Japanese bands from pretty much any and every generation and genre. From 60's Rock'n'Roll and folk to 00's noise and electronica.

If anyone has an issue with me uploading their music please contact me and I'll remove the links immediatley. My intention is to introduce this music to new audiences. So please help support these bands by buying their releases or catching them live if you have the opportunity. Alot of these guys are working full time jobs on top of making great music. Please send comments, complaints, recommendations and seasonal greetings to stinkinhippy@hotmail.com

50on - Nervous Vs

Sorry for the lengthy hiatus. As you can probably guess things have been a little drmatic here in Japan recently. Anyay I haven't posted any electronica in a while so I thought I'd share this with you. 50on is a local Osaka sound collector who splices his field recordings, found sounds and samples with glitchy electronica beats to create som breezy laid back grooves that sound not unlike Prefuse 73 and Secret Mommy. Nervous Vs is a collection of tracks recorded between 2002-2006 and self-released on CDR.

  1. Glad to know you're doing alright! I was definitely starting to get worried. Is everything OK where you're at? I hope you haven't been effected too badly by all of this.

Also, thanks for posting this album! I came across 50on back in 2006/7 and tried desperately to find a copy of this album and ended up simply giving up. This post brought back a lot of memories, I'm excited to give it a good listen.

  2. We felt the tremors here but everything is totally fine down in Osaka. Water and some kinds of food are still being rationed at supermarkets but besides that it's life as normal.

I found another 50on CD at the place I bought this so I'll have to check that out too. I bought it from King Kong in Osaka Shinsaibashi. Lots of good and rare stuff there.

  3. That's good to hear!

I definitely plan on eventually living in Japan, so I'll have to file that suggestion away for the future. I've been teaching myself Japanese over the last 6 months and I've been trying to create an immersion environment for myself, but it's really difficult to give up the music that I listen to. I have been having an especially hard time just finding Japanese music that I really like. You are really the only source of information for music that I go through, as I consistently enjoy your uploads. Do you have any suggestions or links to where I might find more awesome Japanese music (more polished releases in the same vein)? I saw a reference to Yamp Kolt above and immediately downloaded that and really enjoyed it.

Keep up the awesome posts, you fill my ears with more and more interestingly awesome sounds

  4. Sorry for the slow response. I've been having some computer trouble over the last week. Finally got it sorted today.

Hope the Japanese is going well. It's by no means an easy language but probably not as tough as many imagine. The reading and writing is by far the toughest part.

I've only found one or 2 blogs that cover the more obscure and interesting side of Japanese music. Sadly most Japanese music blogs only post awful j-pop and anime soundtracks. Here's a few that are worth checking out though.

  5. Thanks a lot for the response! This is a huge help in expanding my Japanese music library. Japanese has been a slow process, primarily because I've decided to tackle the writing system first using Heisig's method. So far I know nearly 1,500 of the Joyu kanji and I'm hoping to have the rest done by the end of May so I can actually start learning how the kanji work in context (my main goal is to be literate).

I loved the last two releases you've put up, I think I've already almost played たゆたう to death(same thing happened with the Afrirampo release).

    Thanks again for the exposure!
